Why Replace Your RV Microwave?

Can I replace my RV microwave with a regular microwave?

RV microwaves, like any appliance, have a lifespan. If you’re experiencing issues with your microwave or simply want to enhance your kitchen space, replacing it could be a game-changer.

Modernizing your RV kitchen not only adds convenience but also allows you to tailor the space to your unique needs.

For our example, I’ll take you through the stroll of our RV microwave and what happened to it. One day out of the blue, the clock stopped, and this is how it started.

Even though the microwave itself still worked, the display all of a sudden quit working. It wasn’t long afterwords, everything quit. I assumed it was the receptacle, but it turns out, it was the whole unit.

In this case, it was time to turn it into a science experiment for the kids. What to do with that empty space?

Choosing the Right Replacement

Considering we COULD HAVE replaced our microwave, how do you choose the right one? What size microwave fits in an RV? Are RV microwaves special?

When selecting a new microwave for your RV, there are a few factors to consider:

  1. 1) Size Matters: Measure the space where your current microwave sits to ensure your replacement fits snugly. RVs come in various sizes, and finding a compact yet powerful microwave is crucial.Measure the existing location or microwave!

Creative Alternatives to the Microwave

What happens if you feel you don’t need another microwave like we did? For our purpose, we already have a crockpot, and a BBQ. Plus anything you need to warm up in a microwave can easily be done via stovetop or in the oven.

Let’s explore some creative alternatives to the traditional microwave, adding a personal touch to your RV kitchen:

  1. 1) Open Storage Concept: Instead of reinstalling a microwave, consider leaving the space open for storage. Install shelves to showcase your collection of cookbooks, spices, or even aesthetically pleasing kitchenware. This not only adds a decorative element but also makes your kitchen items easily accessible. This was our first choice as well. 2. 2) Portable Induction Cooktops: Embrace the flexibility of portable induction cooktops. These sleek, energy-efficient alternatives allow you to cook a variety of meals without taking up precious counter space. Plus, they’re easy to store when not in use. If you already have an oven mind you, this may not be the best choice!
  3. 3) Slow Cookers and Instant Pots: Opt for appliances that serve multiple purposes. Slow cookers and Instant Pots can be a game-changer in an RV kitchen, allowing you to prepare hearty meals with minimal effort.
This is what we’ve integrated between our toaster in filling the gap.
  4. 4) Compact Toaster Ovens: For those who enjoy baking or roasting, a compact toaster oven can be a fantastic replacement. These versatile appliances are space-saving and offer a range of cooking options.

Tips for a Seamless Transition

  1. 1) Organize Your Kitchen: Before the replacement, declutter and reorganize your kitchen items. This ensures a smooth transition and helps you make the most of your new setup.
  2. 2) DIY Backsplash: Add a personal touch by installing a DIY backsplash. This simple upgrade can transform the look of your kitchen and protect the walls from cooking splatters. (Something I want to do in time!)
  3. 3) Personalized Decor: Infuse your RV kitchen with your personality. Consider adding small plants, vibrant towels, or other decorative elements to make the space feel like home.
