Hey there! So, you’re probably here to get the lowdown on the Benchmark 4500W Inverter Generator — great choice. This updated review covers everything I’ve learned after owning not one, but two units, so you’ll get the real-world perspective on both performance and durability.

Benchmark has built a solid reputation for affordable, dependable generators that hold up well in real-world use. The 4500W inverter model is no exception. For around CAD $1,100 (bought from Home Hardware), it’s a mid-range powerhouse that balances performance, portability, and price extremely well.

Whether you’re a full-time RVer, a DIY homeowner prepping for outages, or a weekend camper, this unit offers enough power for small to medium appliances without the noise or fuel burn of larger models.

Let’s break down my full experience — from the first unboxing to warranty repairs and long-term use — so you can decide if this generator deserves a spot in your setup.

First Impressions and Unboxing Experience

Unboxing the Benchmark 4500W felt like Christmas morning. The packaging was tight, secure, and well thought out. Inside, you get the generator itself, the user manual, a small toolkit, and the remote start key fob.

Right away, I noticed the manual was actually readable — a big win for anyone tired of vague, tech-heavy booklets. Every step, from adding oil to the first startup, was clearly laid out.

Now, my first unit did arrive with a few issues — a banged-up casing and a faulty fuel shut-off valve that flooded the carburetor. Fortunately, it was all covered under warranty, and the process was smooth through Home Hardware. Within a week, a replacement unit arrived at no cost.

That said, first impressions overall were still positive. The straightforward setup, helpful labeling, and clear instructions gave me confidence in Benchmark’s design and quality control, even after the initial hiccup.

Ease of Setup and Installation

Getting the generator up and running was as easy as it gets. Add oil to the marked level, fuel it up (12L tank capacity), and you’re basically ready to roll.

The three starting options make this model stand out:

  1. Electric start button — simple and reliable.

  2. Pull handle — smooth, easy, and doesn’t fight you.

  3. Remote start — the star of the show for RV life.

That remote option is a game-changer when you’re warm inside your rig and don’t want to step into the cold. Everything is clearly labeled on the exterior, so even if it’s your first generator, setup feels intuitive and quick.

In short: no complex steps, no guesswork, and no frustration.

Starting Mechanisms and User Convenience

This is where the Benchmark 4500W earns its keep. The electric start feels modern and effortless — push a button, and you’re up. The manual pull handle also feels balanced and light enough for anyone to manage.

But the remote start is the MVP for RVers. Being able to power up your generator from inside the trailer or tent is an underrated luxury. During colder mornings, this single feature alone has been worth it.

It’s clear Benchmark designed this unit for people who value convenience and reliability over flashy extras. Three start modes mean fewer excuses and more uptime — plain and simple.

Performance and Efficiency

Performance-wise, the 4500W Benchmark hits above its price point. The noise level (61–70dB) is fair — audible but far from obnoxious. At the campground, it fades into the background.

Fuel efficiency is excellent. With its 12L fuel tank, I regularly see between 10–16 hours of runtime depending on whether eco-mode is on. For running essentials, that’s solid endurance.

As for load capacity, I’ve powered:

  • A full RV air conditioner (no stutter)

  • Toasters, small appliances, and lights

  • My two-slot toaster ran flawlessly — something my older Polaris 3000W couldn’t manage

Where it struggled slightly was with an electric water heater, though that might’ve been because the propane switch was still active during testing.

For 95% of what most RVers or homeowners need, this generator handles it.

Operational Challenges and Warranty Experience (The Real Story)

Now here’s where my ownership story gets interesting — because I’ve had two Benchmark 4500W units over time.

The first unit had casing damage and a flooded carburetor, which Benchmark replaced under warranty without hesitation.

The second unit, though reliable at first, developed a new issue months later: the base of the unit cracked from vibration. That crack eventually caused the handle assembly to loosen — the same issue my first model had experienced in a different way.

I brought it to a local small engine repair shop, but they struggled with the warranty claim process. That’s when I contacted Benchmark’s main warranty partner — Midland Power — directly.

Their rep was excellent. After a few back-and-forth emails, we struck a deal: they’d ship me all the necessary parts for free, and I’d handle the repair work myself.

They followed through exactly as promised. I filmed the entire repair process and shared it on YouTube so others could see how to fix theirs if they run into similar issues.

It turned out to be a great experience overall — a little DIY effort, but Benchmark and Midland Power stood behind their warranty. If you ever find yourself in the same boat, reaching out directly to Midland Power is the best route to get a fast, fair resolution.

Maintenance and User-Friendly Features

Keeping this generator running smoothly is easier than most in its class. The external labeling system shows how to perform key tasks like oil changes and air filter swaps without ever opening the manual.

For ongoing upkeep:

  • Stick to regular oil checks

  • Clean or replace filters as needed

  • Keep it dry and stable when running

No advanced tools, no stress. Even if you’re new to generators, this one feels approachable and low-maintenance.

Since my second repair, the unit’s been performing strong again. I’ve logged dozens of hours on it since fixing the cracked base, and it’s been smooth sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is the Benchmark 4500W Inverter Generator worth it for RV use?
Absolutely. For RVers who want reliable power without breaking the bank, it’s one of the best mid-range options available in Canada. It handles air conditioning units, small appliances, and general campsite power with ease.

Q: How loud is the Benchmark 4500W compared to other generators?
Benchmark rates it between 61–70 dB, and that’s about right. It’s quieter than a typical contractor generator, making it campground-friendly. In eco-mode, it hums along quietly enough to hold a conversation nearby.

Q: What’s the real-world runtime on a full tank?
The 12-litre tank gives roughly 10–16 hours, depending on load and whether eco-mode is on. I usually get around 12 hours running standard RV gear.

Q: Can it power an electric water heater or high-draw appliances?
Not consistently. It’s great for A/C units, toasters, and general devices, but full-electric water heaters can push its limits — especially if other appliances are running simultaneously.

Q: What kind of maintenance does it need?
It’s low-maintenance. Oil changes and air-filter checks are clearly labeled on the exterior housing. Keep oil on hand, clean the filter regularly, and check bolts for tightness to prevent vibration damage over time.

Q: Who handles Benchmark’s warranty in Canada?
All warranty service goes through Midland Power. They were great to deal with — responsive, fast, and willing to ship parts directly to me when my second unit needed repairs.

Q: Where can I buy the Benchmark 4500W Inverter Generator?
Most major Home Hardware locations in Canada stock it. You can also occasionally find it online through Benchmark or Midland Power distributors.

Final Verdict and Additional Resources

After two units, dozens of hours of runtime, and a full repair process, I can confidently say the Benchmark 4500W Inverter Generator remains one of the best mid-range RV and home backup generators you can buy in Canada for the money.

It’s not flawless — no generator is — but it delivers dependable, efficient power backed by responsive customer service and a community of real users sharing fixes and reviews.

Rating: 9.5/10 overall

If you’re looking for something portable, fuel-efficient, and well-supported for RV or off-grid use, this generator is a rock-solid option.

You did a fantastic job breaking down its features and usability. I loved your detailed description of the starting mechanisms, especially the remote start feature – it sounds like a game-changer for RV trips. I’m curious, how did you find the noise level compared to other generators you’ve used? Also, do you think it’s suitable for long-term off-grid living?

Your insights made it easy to understand why this generator is a great choice for various needs. Keep up the great work!

      Thanks for the comment Bob.

Noise level in comparison to the 2200 Honda or 3000 Polaris I’ve used is equivelantly the same. It almost seems quieter, but that too depends on the surroundings you have. I know it definately is quieter than the Polaris.

As for long-term off grid living, I feel with the regular maintenance, it is definately a contender. Benchmarks parts and warranty coverage under Midland Power Inc. make you feel relieved to know that a reliable company looks out for their best equipment. It for sure beats out a Firman generator any day!

Hi, would like to know if the propane hose and adapter come with the generator?
    Thanks

    1. Jeremy Avatar

Hi Gilles! Great question — we bought the gas-only version of the Benchmark 4500 inverter generator from Home Hardware, and it did come with oil, but did not include a propane hose or adapter, since it’s not the dual fuel model.

If you’re considering the dual fuel version, it’s designed to run on both propane and gas — but Home Hardware’s listing doesn’t clearly say whether a hose and regulator are included in the box. I’d recommend calling their customer service line (1-877-528-3772) or checking with your local store just to confirm before buying.

      Hope that helps!

I have purchased the dual fuel model and it does come with the propane regulator and hose. I have not run the unit yet so I cannot say anything more.

      1. Jeremy Avatar

Appreciate you sharing that, Walt! Once you give it a go, I’d love to hear how it runs — especially on propane. We’ve had a few readers curious about the dual fuel models lately, and real feedback goes a long way. If you run into any quirks or tips during setup, feel free to drop them here too. Always good to compare notes with fellow RVers!
