You have a camping trip planned with a group of friends and everyone has their tasks to perform once you are at your destination. Steve is in charge of booking tee times at the golf course, Shirley is taking care of getting the best burning firewood, Jack has taken responsibility of setting up the generator and tents, while Julie mastered in taking care of the camping snack food ideas.

Snack Food - What is it?

With that, this article proceeds to include all sorts of yummy treats, albeit a quick grab-and-go snack to take on your mountain bike rides, or an appetizer before the 5-star BBQ meal you’re bound to get roped into cooking. Regardless, its time to get right into things.

Original Snack Ideas

Fruits & Veggies – This has got to be the easiest thing to plan on taking on any camping trip, as far as snack food goes. Fruits and Veggies are packed with lots of nutrients and act as an energy source when on a long trek carrying your hiking backpack.

Conveniently, you can Fruits and Veggies - Snacksalso store many of these snacks inside your backpack, so there’s no shortage of taking lots of these delicious items along.

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Oranges
  • Grapes
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Tomatoes
  • Cherries

No matter what the scenario, having these original snacks available for any camping excursion is sure to keep you less “hangry” until the actual main course meal.

Cheese & Crackers – Here’s another original snack idea that often goes overlooked. Some of the easiest snacks to take along on your camping trips are the simplest ones, and this ties into that category easily.

Cheese comes in many flavors now-a-days so you don’t have to go too original. Switch it up and have brie or swiss cheese and combine it with many of the variations of crackers you might enjoy, such as a multi-grain or flavored cracker.

Jerky – How about grabbing a bunch of jerky the next time you’re in need of a camping snack food idea? The best part about jerky is not only the flavor, but the fact it can be made from almost any type of meat. Getting creative, next time attempt to have salmon jerky for your snack, it’s quite the difference in taste from your original beef jerky.

But if you’re stuck on the dark meat versions of jerky and enjoy making it like myself, let me tell ya…Goose Jerky is probably my favourite af all time. Want the recipe?

Granola Bars – Of course I am adding granola bars onto this list, as all sorts of these goodies make great snacks. With the Trail Mixcombination of nuts and seeds mixed into a bar, all that energy pack a punch in one bite of a granola bar.

And if you deconstruct a granola bar, you have granola, which also makes for a great individual snack as is. Going one step further, some granola bars have nuts and seeds like I mentioned, so turning that itself into a snack is also just as delicious. It’s basically a 3-in-1 snack no matter how you look at it!

If you want to take it one step further, some granola bars such as Nature Valley bars come with a bunch more ingredients such as dried cranberries, which when you dis-assemble that type of bar, essentially you’ll have Trail mix, which also happens to be another great original snack.

Mind you, there are many forms of trail mix, and some of these are easily home made. Adding things like cereal mixes such as shreddies and cheerios make it more of a savory mix than a sweet one. Both of which are great suggestions for snack foods.

Popcorn – Having this option make for a great suggestion especially if kids are around. Most RVs, travel trailers and fifthwheels come with microwaves so you can easily have popcorn ready in a matter of seconds. If you need to make this treat the old-fashioned way, get a burner and your campstove, put your kernels in a pot with a little addition of oil and shake your pot until you hear the pop.

The technique to make popcorn over an open flame is unique and tricky all in the same, but once you master it, it’s not that difficult. Just remember to not spill any outdoors because you’ll have crows in your campground bright and earlier waking you up.

More Unique Camping Snacks

Hummus & Veggies – Take your fruit and veggies one step further, ditch the fruit and add hummus. A more delicious flavorful alternative than dips and dressings. Hummus and veggies are a great combination of snacks to be had, especially if you’re just chilling on your favorite lawnchair, reading a book.

Pre-Made Energy Bites – Having found this recipe one time, I always expected to make a bunch of these and take along on a camping trip. This was until we discovered these ball shaped goodies in the form of a prepackaged bar. It was during one of our stays at a campground in the Kootenays that we were introduced to Larabars.

Larabars are made with just 4 ingredients and are available in 5, 16 or 20 pack boxes and can certainly be found in grocery stores.

Roasted Chickpeas – Here’s another interesting snack that has a lot of deliciousness. Some packaging comes with different flavors, but you can get original salted flavors and they do the trick to keep you satisfied in a snacky scenario.

Not only do chickpeas give you that nutritional value, each package gives you enough calories to burn off 30 minutes of walking, so your daily activities shouldn’t deplete.

Grilled Camping Snacks

Getting more involved here, because Julie is taking care of the camping snack food ideas, she thought about everything and went as far as planning some outdoor kitchen, BBQ grilling meals, aka snacks, aka appetizers.

Some of the more entertaining and delicious ideas are:

Bacon-wrapped jalapeno shrimp poppers – Wrapping shrimp in bacon seems like a great idea until you realize that the shrimp are fully cooked before the bacon gets crispy. Solution: precook the bacon slices for a few minutes before wrapping the shrimp. Also, secure both ends of each slice with cocktail picks so the bacon doesn’t fall off.

Now that you are aware of the secret, it’s definitely a snack that keeps you on the level after a busy day on the water on your stand up paddle board.

Chicken Wings – Hey, why not! Chicken wings can be a versatile food that can act as a snack, appetizer, and even a main course. No matter what flavor and how many, the best tasting wings by far have been done on the grill. There are 2 secrets to remember: 1) Direct medium heat for 10-15 minutes turning once or twice, followed by indirect medium heat for another 10-ish minutes OR 2) direct low heat for 30-40 minutes turning occasionally, or until juices run clear and meat is no longer pink.

Chicken Wings - Snack or Appetizer?

Smoked Trout Bruschetta – Yup, you heard right. What takes 20 minutes to prep and only 30 minutes of grill time, this snack idea is probably the most interesting one you’ll encounter, yet its deliciousness will be wanting you to make it over and over for every occasion.

If done correctly, you’ll need 2 boneless or bone-in trout, gutted and cleaned to be cooked directly on a wooden cedar plank. Once complete, you’ll add tomatoes and fresh dill with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice topped on a nice toasted baguette.

2-words for this scum-dittley-umpcious snack: Mouth Watering!

Meatballs on a stick – Here’s an idea that is sure to keep your kids satisfied until meal time. You can pre-make these meatballs using any source of ground meat you have.

  • – Ground Beef
  • – Ground Chicken
  • – Gournd Turkey
  • – Ground Pork
  • – Ground Bison
  • – Ground Venison

Whatever single or multiple combinations you want to concoct with the spices of your choice, when ready, grill them up and serve.

Sweet Treats Using Plants

That’s right, plants. Like actual snacks you’d get right from nature, with the aid of store bought items of course. For example:

Wild-Blueberry Fruitsicles – On a hot sunny day sitting under your shade tent, you may feel like a Popsicle for a snack. Well these homemade versions use 2 cups of wild blueberries, a cup of yogurt, some vanilla extract, lemon juice, lemon peel, rosewater and whipping cream. Freezing them into pop moulds or small cups will give you approximately 12 ready to eat, refreshing, cool-you-down snacks that even your pet might enjoy!

Roasted Dandelion-Root Ice Cream – Continuing on with the hot-hot heat theme, you’ll more than likely be enticed to try this sweet mocha-goodness flavor of ice cream as a snack. Definitely a recipe that you want to make at home and bring along in your RV.

Fruit Leather – Who remembers fruit roll-ups, or fruit leather as a child? Did you know that you can eat three different versions of this kids lunch snack? Fruit Leather - Apple / Strawberry

  • Raw Uncooked – Perfect for raw foodies. Not cooking the wild fruit helps preserve the many enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, plus makes for a delicious and healthy sweet snack.
  • Living – The raw fruit leather is rich in antioxidants when combining the right ingredients. There are special techniques to make this version and if you’d like the recipe for it, reach out through the about founder section to email me.
  • Cooked Process – This last version, the cooked process is good to use if you are introducing fruits that brown easily, such as apples or pears.

No matter which version, this snack has got to be the easiest to take along on any camping trip you have planned, and definetly enjoyed by whomever decides to eat it.
