What is Houseboating?

The question some of you may have if your new to this term is “what is houseboating”? Houseboating is a vacation experience that combines the best aspects of boating and camping. Technically it’s your motorhome on water.

It involves renting or owning a self-contained floating home that allows you to explore lakes, rivers, or coastal areas while enjoying the comforts and amenities of a traditional house.

It’s a perfect getaway for those seeking serenity, relaxation, and a connection with nature. Just ask one whose had the luxury of experiencing this setting for seven years straight thanks to a family friend!

Now one word of advice is to not get houseboating confused with a houseboat, which has an entire different definition according to Wikipedia –

A houseboat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily for regular dwelling. Most houseboats are not motorized as they are usually moored or kept stationary at a fixed point, and often tethered to land to provide utilities.

The houseboat that I’m used to is pictured above, so now you should be on the same wavelength through the rest of the article! 🙂

    Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for sharing this great article. I found it very useful.

We are planning a trip to Canada this summer and thought it would be nice to do a houseboat journey. I’ll certainly use the packing list you have shared. I do have a question, though. Isn’t the houseboat company responsible for providing safety equipment, such as life jackets, for passengers on board? I ask this because we were once on a fishing charter, and the boat was equipped with safety gear.

Also, what if we don’t have any fishing gear or don’t want to carry them? Does the houseboat company rent those gear?

    Thanks a lot!

      Hi Daniella,

Thank you for your comment, and I’m glad you found the article useful! Regarding your question about safety equipment on houseboats, it’s always a good idea to check with the specific houseboat company you’ll be renting from. While many reputable houseboat rental companies do provide safety equipment, including life jackets, it’s not a universal standard. Some companies may provide basic safety equipment, while others may require you to bring your own. It’s essential to inquire about this beforehand to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

As for fishing gear, if you don’t have any or prefer not to carry it, houseboat rental companies often offer fishing gear rentals for an additional fee. This allows you to enjoy fishing without the need to bring your own equipment. Again, it’s best to contact the houseboat company directly to inquire about their rental options and any associated costs.

From my personal experiences with both questions, and my current position as a Camphost on the Shuswap, I can tell you that I do notice the odd life saving devices such as floating rings on board houseboats, however I cannot attest to the life jackets. And as for the fishing gear, honestly, I always bring my own as I know what I have. But the key also is to make sure you have the proper licensing! 😉

Have a fantastic trip to Canada and enjoy your houseboat journey! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
